It is so important for the mind to settle down. Otherwise we will be preoccupied with all the thoughts and imaginations constantly, into worries, cravings, fear and stress. Meditation Master Babaji mentions that a daily practice of meditation is so necessary for the mind to start settling down and to become relaxed. It cools down and recedes as we put in efforts to just watch any thought or imagination that comes up.
“It takes time; in the beginning you have to put efforts – ten minutes, fifteen minutes, even thirty minutes it can be a struggle. Then after that it may start settling once the mind is tired; as you go on doing every day the mind becomes relaxed. It won’t go after the thoughts for a long time. So, very quickly, ten minutes, fifteen minutes it will come under control, then it settles down.”
“You should not visualize anything, do not expect anything also. These are important things, then meditation becomes smooth.”
“You don’t have to force it, skilfully, slowly you have to practice. Then slowly it settles down in composure. Not to force, but be firm. ‘Firm’ and ‘forcing’ are slightly different. ‘Forcing’ is you are in a rush, abruptness. ‘Firm’ is you will achieve that, you will not give up.”
“You are thinking about the thought. That’s why it is increasing. The thoughts are all increasing, tremendously increasing. If you stop and just watch, then it will all decrease and will vanish. During this period is the patience. That’s what is the tapas, patience, meditation, that you need to practice.” ~Shiva Rudra Balayogi
